In 2015, Adidas became a global partner of Parley and began introducing eco-concept shoes made almost entirely from ocean plastic waste as raw material, naming them 'adidas x Parley.' By the end of June, Adidas unveiled the first unique UltraBOOST at the United Nations headquarters, featuring a distinctive shoe design with materials such as yarn sourced from discarded plastic bottles and illegal fishing nets from the oceans.
In 2017, they sold over a million pairs of sports shoes made from ocean plastic waste. It's worth noting that the materials for this series are derived from recycled marine debris, confiscated fishing nets from illegal poaching, and plastic bottles are crushed and broken down by machines to extract fiber and other basic materials. Additionally, the upper part of the shoe is made of 5% recycled polyester (e.g., fishing nets) and 95% recycled plastic, with all raw materials collected from the nearby ocean surface, with an average of 11 plastic bottles used for each pair of sneakers.
In 2021, Adidas produced nearly 18 million pairs of shoes containing ocean plastic. In early April of this year, they launched the 4DFWD xParley running shoes, made with high-performance yarn containing 81% of Parley Ocean Plastic eco-friendly materials."
